As Spring moves forward, the focus on lawn care shifts to weed and crabgrass prevention. For this step, the use of Crabgrass Preventer and spot treating weeds in required.
As you remember, our first step of the program did include Crabgrass Preventer, but the continued use of this product remains important in assuring a healthy, weed free and green lawn. Crabgrass grows annually with leaves that can stretch out in diameter up to 12 inches. This weed can produce over 150,000 seeds that can leave behind large dead areas of your grass. The most efficient way to protect your lawn from this weed is by attacking it before it germinates. As mentioned in step 1, use a hybrid product that consists of Crabgrass Preventer and Green-Up to ensure a healthy green lawn.
Spot treating weeds consists of targeting smaller areas or individual weeds until it gets hot. Broadleaf herbicides are very effective. Remember to follow the directions to the herbicide you have chosen. Directions may vary depending on if you are using a concentrate or premixed solution. Most liquid herbicides only work in temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees. At lower temperatures, the weeds aren’t growing fast enough to absorb the chemicals and at higher temperatures the chemicals vaporize before the weed can absorb them.
